This is a new feature I'm trying out- Interviewing fabulous NJ Wedding Pros! Today's interview is with Kate Connolly, photographer extraordinaire and owner of Kate Connolly Weddings. Not only is she incredibly talented, but she is just an awesome person, an RU grad, a sister of Gamma Phi Beta, and newly engaged herself! Her photography blog is full of gorgeous wedding eye candy, and her new venture, Love Toast is stuffed with inspiration and all around fabulosity. We've worked together on weddings, and styled a shoot together for the Love Toast Launch - we had a great time, and I wanted to know how she got so freakin' awesome- so I asked her! Enjoy! What drew you to become a photographer? What drew me to become a photographer: I always loved photography . My mother was a photography lover and I always enjoyed it . I was drawn to weddings because I love to capture the emotional and special moments that come with each unique event.
What do you love about wedding photography in particular? I love that weddings are all so unique. Each event I go to is completely different from the next . This keeps my creativity fresh.
In your eyes, what is the quintessential NJ wedding like? My immediate gut answer is that in NJ we are all about the food. But I think what really makes NJ unique is that there is no one style. It is such a diverse place that I see so many wedding styles.
How do you stay inspired and plugged in to creating great art? I am always following wedding blogs , reading fashion magazines, and just staying in tune with industry trends.
Name your favorite moment from a wedding in the past year. I had a couple move their wedding from Saturday to Friday when they found out they could not have their wedding during Hurricane Irene. I was so touched by the event. The bride had such a great attitude, and kept laughing and saying" my wedding got canceled." Nothing was as planned. They got married outside of a restaurant (where their rehearsal dinner was scheduled), all of the details they planned were not there. The wedding was so touching because it was about the couple getting married , not the party. I think a lot of couples lose sight of what the wedding day is about while planning their day. it was so nice to see a wedding with no fuss.
What is the number one thing that couples need to remember when hiring a wedding photographer? They have to trust and love their photographer. When you hire a photographer you are hiring a third wheel for your wedding day. We will be with you when you laugh, when you cry, and through your most intimate moments. You want to be comfortable. Photographers are artists and we all have a unique style. Don't ever hire someone based on price and think you can just tell them what shots you want and to mimic. That is a huge mistake some couples make. Hire someone that has a portfolio you love and you will be happy.
Any sage advice for couples getting married this year? I think just everything above. Be confident in your photography choice. Make your wedding personal and don't loose sight of why you're having a wedding during the planning.
And there you have it! As always, keep celebrating!!
